A neighbor asked me how much extra PV capacity is needed to provide the electricity to charge an electric car. I told him that I’d look into it. Here’s what I found:
Chevrolet has thrown out a figure of 25 kWh per 100 miles (source ) for the Chevy Volt. 12,000 miles a year would require 3000 kWh. My 4.4 kW system generates about 6000 kWh per year (real world PV solar performance data). That means that I’d need about an extra 2.2 kW worth of panels (another 11 panels in my case) in order to generate the electricity to operate the Volt.
